Volcanic speleology tour in Kamchatka
Tour N 22. Volcanic speleology tour in Kamchatka
The best period for the tour is from July 15 till September 30.
Arrival dates for 2008: August 5, September 3.
This tour is for those who are interested in traveling to the underground world, i.e. in speleology.
You can see and explore caves unique by their volcanic origin. You'll visit such active volcanoes as Mutnovsky and Tolbachinsky, which are ones of the most interesting volcanoes on Kamchatka.
1st day.Arrival at the airport. Transfer to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Accommodation at the hotel, rest, strolls along the city.
2nd day. Driving by "off-road" car to Gorely volcano, up to the Krasnaya hill (80 km). A small walk on the hardened lava streams and in the caldera of Gorely volcano. An axcursion to the mountain Vorony Kamen (Crow Stone) by name, which is made of vertical basalt pillars. Spending the night in tents.
3rd day. Examination and exploration of 6 horizontal caves 30-70 meter deep, which served as lava ways. In the evening driving to Mutnovsky volcano. An excursion to the waterfall (90 m) in the Opasny (Dangetrous) canyon. Spending the night in tents.
4th day. Ascent to the crater of Mutnovsky volcano. Seeing active fumaroles, mud siphons, a mountain lake. The crater of Mutnovsky volcano is one of the most striking volcanic phenomena on Kamchatka. Steep walls surround deep and wide crater cavity with sparkling glaciers, shattered splits and products of boiling fumaroles. The ascent takes 8 hours. Spending the night in tents.
5th day. Ascent to Gorely volcano (1829 m), walking on the hardened lava stream, slag fields, seeing 8 craters with small lakes. An excursion takes 8 hours. In the evening transfer to the recreation department in the resort area "Paratunka". Accommodation, rest, bathing in the pool with hot thermal water.
6th day.Driving by "off-road" car to the Kozyrevsk settlement (450 km). When the weather is fine, you can see the highest volcanoes in Kamchatka from this place. They are Krestovsky (4057 m), Ushkovsky (3903 m), Kluchevskoy (4750 m), Kamen (4579 m), Plosky Tolbachik (3082 m), and Ostry Tolbachik (3672 m). Spending the night in tents.
7th day. Driving by "off-road" car to the Dead Forest at the Tolbachik dale. On the route seeing the northern froup of the Tolbachik cones. These cones are a special group of volcanic formations, which represent themselves the small-scale volcanoes, their height is 100-200 m. An excursion walk to the Dead Forest remained after the slag eruptions in 1975. Spending the night in tents.
8th day. Examination and exploration of 2 horizontal caves, which served as lava ways. One cave is 110 meters deep; the other is like a room 10 meters wide and 10 meters long. Ascent to the cones of the northern group.
9th day. Trek to the Southern cones of Tolbachik volcano (7 km), formed at the result of the Big Tolbachik Eruption in 1975. There are more than 27 horizontal caves in the hardened lava streams. Ascent to the cones. Setting up the camp, spending the night in tents.
10th day. Examination and exploration caves, the extension of which is from 15 up to 540 meters, with lots of halls and grottos. Returning to the Dead Forest in the evening.
11th day. Driving by "off-road" car to the Kozyrevsk settlement. Russian baths. Spending the night near the picturesque lake.
12th day. Transfer To Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky by car. Accommodation at the recreation department in the resort area "Paratunka". Rest, bathing in the pool with hot thermal water.
13th day. City guided tour. An excursion to the Museum of Local History. Visit to the fish market. Souvenirs. On request a helicopter excursion to the Valley of Geysers is available.
14th day. Transfer to the airport.
The cost of this tour for 1 person is 1230 EURO. The extra pay for the accommodation in a single department is 150 EURO
The cost of the helicopter excursion to the Valley of Geysers and the caldera of volcano “Uzon” is about 470 EURO. The excursion is paid on the day of flight. As the flight is realized only if the weather is nice.
The cost includes:
1. 3 time meals a day during the whole tour.
2. Service of guide (during the whole tour).
3. Service of cook (during the whole tour).
4. Service of translator (during the whole tour).
5. Base equipment (tents, etc.).
6. Transport service (bus, truck).
7. Residence at the hotel and the recreation department.
8. Visa support and registration.
The cost does not include:
1. Purchase of alcoholic drinks, cigarettes.
2. Purchase of souvenirs.
Tourists themselves carry all the equipment and meal (food).
If necessary it's possible to use porters' services and satellite phone for an extra fee.
Each participant of the tour should have a backpack, a sleeping bag, a tourist rug, strong footwear, head flash-light, subjects of personal hygiene, and bathing accessories.
